Using a combination of mathematical tools and data, we seek new understanding of the biology of parasites and of how their traits and behaviours influence disease dynamics and control.
Some of the broad questions we’re exploring include:
▪ Why do some parasites lead to severe disease in their hosts while others are comparatively benign?
▪ What evolutionary factors have shaped parasite traits that underlie disease severity and transmission?
▪ Which factors will accelerate or constrain the evolution of parasite traits when selective forces change, e.g., due to interventions?
▪ Can these factors be manipulated to generate favourable clinical outcomes or impede negative parasite evolutionary responses, such as drug resistance?
